Kenyan Sign Language Acquisition Assessment Tool

An AI-powered tool assessing Kenyan Sign Language skills in young deaf learners

United Kingdom, Netherlands, Kenya

Focus Area:

K-12 Learning

Prize Level:

Growth Prize

Project Description

Our tool, to our knowledge, is the first AI-enhanced sign language acquisition assessment in Africa, designed to support early-grade deaf and hard of hearing learners in mastering their first language, sign language. It measures both expressive and receptive KSL skills using video-based prompts and interprets responses through AI, providing rapid, accessible feedback. By generating disaggregated, AI-ready datasets and open-source tools, the platform strengthens inclusive learning at scale. Led by a Deaf and women-led African team, it advances equity in education and contributes unique, underrepresented data to the global learning engineering community.
